The Long Story…

If you want to hire bob as a consultant, director or creative guru, or are just curious - read this!

Bob is a seasoned performer, director, and theatre-maker whose eclectic career spans over three decades and multiple disciplines—from street theatre and circus to magic, puppetry, and contemporary performance.

He began his creative journey playing in bands from the age of 15, before stepping into the world of physical theatre via London's Circus Space in the early 1990s, where he studied clowning and comedy with Gerry Flannaghan. He later trained at Fool Time (now Circomedia), and studied with luminaries including Angela de Castro, Guy Dartnell, Frankie Anderson, and Haggis McLeod.

In the 1990s, Bob formed the physical comedy duo Percy and Allen, performing throughout the London comedy circuit and gaining critical acclaimThe Guardian dubbed them “the Gilbert and George of fire-eating,” while Time Out called them “scarily funny.” The duo were runners-up in the Hackney Empire New Act of the Year and regular fixtures on the cabaret and comedy scene.

As part of The Unfortunati Commedia group, Bob won the Street Theatre Award at the Covent Garden Street Performers Competition, bringing a playful and theatrical edge to open-air performance. He later became Head of Acting at Circus Space, where he taught clowning and performance for 14 years, and served as Head of Acting for the Millennium Dome training course.

Bob has directed a wide range of shows—from intimate cabaret acts to large-scale circus productions. His directing credits include the British premiere of Mauricio Kagel’s Varieties for the Almeida Opera Festival, as well as acclaimed work with the Norwich Puppet Theatre, Zannie Fraser (Luminous Tales), and Danny Schlesinger (Circo Ridiculoso). He directed the award-winning Dust for Indefinite Articles and helped create the first solo show for hip-hop artist Benji Reid, in collaboration with Battersea Arts Centre.

A lifelong devotee of magic, Bob became a member of The Magic Circle in the early 2000s and continues to blend magic, mentalism, and storytelling into theatrical experiences that both entertain and provoke. He has trained with Avner Eisenberg (Avner the Eccentric) and consulted for a wide range of performers, including Romany—The Diva of Magic (Penn & Teller: Fool Us, Showzam) and Christian Lee (Britain’s Got Talent, Jacksons Lane).

Bob’s work blurs the boundaries between traditional and contemporary performance. He brings a rare mix of insight, irreverence, and imagination to everything he does, questioning orthodoxies while staying rooted in popular theatre forms and the power of good storytelling. With experience in puppetry, physical theatre, walkabout performance, cabaret, close-up and stage magic, he continues to direct, perform, and consult across a wide variety of creative projects.

Known for his curiosity and creativity, he continues to work across a wide range of settings, always staying grounded in bold ideas, strong craft, and popular appeal.
